EMDR or EMI
What’s the difference?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and EMI (Eye Movement Integration) use bilateral stimulation - usually guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds - while the client recalls aspects of a memory.
The key idea is that distressing memories can get “stuck” in the nervous system and the process helps the brain reprocess it so it becomes less emotionally charged.
How can EMDR and EMI help?
Sometimes, past experiences can feel as though they’re still affecting you in the present—whether that shows up as anxiety, low confidence, unwanted habits, or emotional triggers that don’t seem to make sense. You might identify that experience as a trauma but sometimes it can feel more subtle.
The sessions work by helping your brain “unstick” these experiences so they can be processed more naturally. As this happens, many people notice:
A reduction in emotional intensity linked to past events
Feeling calmer and more in control in situations that once felt overwhelming
Greater clarity and perspective
Increased confidence and resilience
A sense of moving forward, rather than feeling held back
It can be particularly helpful for traumas, anxiety, phobias, past experiences that still feel present, and patterns that don’t seem to shift through talking alone.
What a session is like
EMI sessions are calm, contained, and collaborative.
We begin by identifying what you’d like help with—this might be a specific memory, a feeling, or a pattern in your life. You don’t need to go into detail unless you want to.
During the process, I’ll gently guide your eye movements through a series of patterns while you briefly bring the experience to mind. Many clients are surprised by how natural and effortless this feels. Sometimes we might use tapping in addition to or instead of the eye movements.
You remain fully aware and in control throughout. There’s no pressure to talk extensively, and no expectation to revisit anything you don’t feel comfortable with.
As the session progresses, people often notice the emotional charge around the issue beginning to shift—sometimes quite quickly. By the end, what once felt intense may feel distant, neutral, or simply “resolved.”
Why choose EMI?
People often choose EMI because it offers a different way of working—especially if they’ve found traditional talking approaches limited or exhausting.
You might be drawn to EMI if you:
Prefer a gentle, non-intrusive approach
Don’t want to go into lots of detail about the past
Are looking for a focused, efficient way to create change
Feel stuck in patterns that don’t seem logical
Want to work at a pace that feels comfortable and manageable
EMI respects your mind’s natural ability to heal, offering the right conditions for that process to happen.
A supportive, tailored approach
Every session is guided by your needs. Whether you’re looking for help with a specific issue or a more general sense of feeling “stuck,” we work together to create a calm, supportive space where change can happen.
